Anza, the vocalist of Headphones President started off as a Japanese teenage idol, doing everything from musicals and modeling to idol groups and solo projects. After releasing her first single, Tobira wo akete, which later became a theme song for the popular anime "Card Captor Sakura", Anza was asked if she wanted to be in a different kind of band. In that time when she was working with her solo project, she received help from the guitarist, Hiro, and met his brother, Mar. Together they formed the band Deep Blue. Soon they found bassist, Kawady, and drummer, Okaji, and managed to release their first single, "Escapism" in 2000 after changing the name to Head Phones President.
The single managed to become #1 at the Shibuya Tower Records Charts within three days following its release. They celebrated that the same day, having a free in-store live where over 300 people came to see them. Before the band's second single, "Crap Head," the bassist decided to leave and was replaced by Narumi. Playing at small clubs all over Japan, they started to gain more popularity; fans started calling them 'HPP' as a nickname as they traveled anywhere to see them.
Their first album, "Vary," also managed to hit the #1 spot at Tower Records, but this time for the Indies charts. From 2002 they went on their first of many USA tours. In 2005, Okaji decided to leave the band, wanting to make his own music, which wasn't the same style as HPP. They soon found a support drummer, Batch, who has been with them ever since, and has yet to become an official member. They continue to tour Japan, taking a break every now and then to allow Anza to work on her solo career.
